The Arts Council for England have spearheaded a new brass band training programme for children in the Stalham area of Norfolk. The scheme which has been developed in conjunction with the British Federation of Brass Bands is being run as a pilot over the next five years. The aim is to provide heritage brass bands of long standing, based within a community, with a steady intake of new players from Junior and High schools in their area. In the first year, places are limited to sixty children, but this increases with each years new intake. The band receives grants to provide instruments on free loan to children who also receive free professional tuition in and out of school time. Children are enrolled as members of the Stalham Brass Band and as such will also have master classes provided over the years by specialist groups. Stalham's director of music, Dr. Tim Thirst MBE, has also developed a training support programme with Lt. Colonel Bob Meldrum MBE, Principal Director of Music (Army) HM Forces.
